Sterling Silver Bar Brooch with Maple Leaves and Monogrammed Shield

A small, sterling silver, antique bar pin decorated with a pair of maple leaves and a shield. The shield has been monogrammed with the letter "M" (for Mother?). The brooch has a C-clasp, is circa 1890, and is in used condition. It is still very wearable and quite pretty!

Markings: The back of the bar is stamped with the word "Sterling" and a maker's mark. The maker's mark is too faint to read any longer. It is in the shape of a tree with two (illegible) symbols at the top.

Size: The brooch is about 1-1/2" in length. Total weight is 2.3 grams.

Condition: This tiny brooch was so black with tarnish that it took a couple of polishings before I realized that there was a maker's mark stamped beside the word "Sterling". That it has come up so good, without any pitting, is very nice. (When pieces get this badly tarnished, the best thing to do is to remove the tarnish in layers. Take off whatever tarnish goes easily and then leave it for a few days. If you have the time, I have found that this reduces damage and surface marking by overpolishing.) The C-clasp is just a little bent, you can see this in the photograph. The pin is also not quite straight. Taking both of these concerns into consideration, this is a pretty, wearable, antique brooch which I am sure will light up someones eyes.
