Inuit Carving of Sedna, Black Serpentine - Baker Lake (Kivalliq)

Product Description

This stone carving (black serpentine) of Sedna is from the Baker Lake or Kivalliq Region of Nunavit, Canada. The piece is signed on the bottom in 'Inuktitut' (the syllabic Inuit language). The story, or folk tale, of Sedna is an extraordinarily sad one. It tells of misdeeds and mistrust, which result in an angry compassion for all life. This carving of Sedna has her in her spiritual form. Occasionally these carvings are called "shape-shifters" but I do not believe that the Sedna carvings fit into this category. She was not a Shaman changing to learn, she was changed permanently, by the actions of others. There is a link to the tale at the bottom of this page.
*** Please Note that the story of Sedna is a story which is repeated out of legend. It is not a kind story, and it may not be suitable for everyone as this version has not been re-written for children.
The Baker Lake region is known for a very traditional style carvings. The beauty in these pieces is in the simple lines and finishing. These are much rougher pieces than the more modern soapstone pieces.
This Sedna is carved from black serpentine, a very hard stone and one which many consider difficult to work with. The coloring is very solid black. The depressed areas of the carving completely unpolished, with most of the surface polished my many hands. This carving has been finished only to the point of being smooth. There is an artist's signature on the bottom. This carving is from an estate and we believe it to be circa 1920's.
Condition: There are several places where the carving is not completely smooth. I believe these areas to be defects in the stone rather than damage (there is a "grain" to serpentine, these areas follow this grain, the largest of these areas of note is approximately 1/4" across and not deep). Photos will be sent for approval before shipping.
Size: 10" x 5-1/2" x 2-1/4". Total weight is 3-3/4 pounds.
Shipping: The cost of shipping and insurance will be calculated and invoiced separately for this item. A shipping quote (the actual cost of shipping to your address) can be forwarded to you before purchase.
