The Royal Crown Derby Porcelain Company, granted the name by Queen Victoria in 1890, has a long and interesting history beginning in the mid 1700's. There are many "Derby" traditions, followed even today, but the most noticeable is in the piece manufactured in the early 1900's. You see, the techniques were all of fine craftsmanship. No mechanical processes were used, and therefore, there was noticeable variation in between pieces of the same shape, size, and pattern.
One pattern that can be easily spotted today, in many antique shops, is "Blue Mikado". The flow blue of the background did indeed flow.... But not evenly and not in every piece. Take a look for it, because once you know to expect the differences in the pieces, you will find that they are there, and delightful in a very special way.
So keeping alive the Derby traditions of fine craftsmanship. No mechanical processes were used, and no two pieces produced were exactly the same.
