The word Kutani means "Nine Valleys." It is the name of a village in Japan and is also used to describe the pottery and porcelain made in this area. The products made here are not made at one factory, rather - they are made at many small factories and sold and traded through many small shops. This village began producing porcelain, made from the local clays mined in the area, in 1655. By the 1960's approximately 70% of production was exported to North America. About 80% of production is exported here today.
