Coalport China Ltd. began as Coalport Porcelain Works, with a history going back to the mid 18th century. Approximately 1795, Coalport Porcelain Works (John Rose & Co.) was founded in the town of Coalport. In 1926, Coalport Porcelain Works was acquired by Cauldon Potteries and moved to Shelton, Stoke-on-Trent.
They moved again, soon after this, to the Crescent Work, also in Stoke. 1951 saw the name of this company officially changed to "Coalport China Ltd." This change is reflected in the backstamps of work produced after 1950. 1955 saw another move, from Crescent Works to a factory owned by Samuel Radford, High Street, Fenton. In 1958 Coalport China was acquired by E. Brain & Co. and became a part of the Foley Works. The backstamp changed again in 1963, showing the name simply as Coalport.
The most recent change in this company's history happened in 1967 when Coalport became a part of the Wedgwood Group. In 1985, Coalport China Ltd. moved to the Minerva Works, Park Street, Fenton and in 2000 to the Wedgwood Factory in Barleston where production continues today.
