Chintz

Chintz. A new type of printed fabric that was fashionable almost immediately, when it became available in the Victorian era. Chintz china followed very closely!

The patterns on chintz china are usually applied decals, the cutting and placing of the decals was (and still is) such a refined skill that I am tempted to call the pieces art. If you look closely at a chintz piece, especially a piece that is rounded or has many edges and corners, you will see the seams which are masterfully hidden within the designs. This labor intensive craft was costly to produce. I wonder if perhaps this was the most important factor in amount produced - which, compared to other styles of decoration, was very little.
