Celery Dish, circa 1890

Product Description

I fell in love with this beautiful dish and the decal of the green orchid, as soon as I saw it. The beautiful green background, applied with a sponge underneath the decals. The decals are just beginning to oxidize, they are applied over top of the glazes. This is because, when this plate was made the decals could not yet stand the heat of a fire hot enough to melt the final glaze. So, they were applied on top and do not have the protection afforded the rest of the plate.
I love using these dishes to serve small rolls, biscuits or pastries. Things which will not harm and will not be harmed by the glazes and pigments. The shape lends itself so well to setting into the small spaces between other dishes.... So wonderfully elegant and fun at the same time!
Size: Approximately 12-3/8" x 5-3/4". Total depth is about 1-1/4".
Condition: This celery plate is in excellent condition. There is very slight oxidation of the decal beginning. You'll have to examine the plate to see a few places where the edges of the flowers and leaves have darkened at one end of plate. No chips or cracks. On the foot, one end has a notched area. This looks a lot more like something that happened in the kiln than damage. I would love to send a full set of photos to you. Leslie
